2008 - Scott AFB Airshow Airpower Over
the Midwest
www.scottairshow.com The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will return for the Scott AFB Airshow on 20-21 September 2008
Scott Air Force Base is gearing up to welcome the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and a big crowd of air show enthusiasts for its 2008 air show. The base's annual air show and open house is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 20-21, which is later in the year than shows in the past. "It just happens to be the date that it fell on for Scott this year while they were scheduling air shows," said Air Force 1st Lt. Karoline Scott, a spokeswoman for the 375th Airlift Wing at the base. The Thunderbirds last appeared in the Scott air show in 2006. "It was a very big show. We had over 100,000 in attendance," Scott said. "This will be a big show, and we are very excited to welcome the Thunderbirds back to Scott Air Force Base." Specific details about the air show, such as times and other acts appearing, are still being hammered out. Additional details will become available as the date grows nearer, Scott said. "We are still in the early planning stages of the air show," Scott said. The Thunderbirds are celebrating the unit's 55th anniversary in 2008 and will perform more than 67 shows in the United States and Canada. The demonstration squadron is known for its aerial demonstrations in the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Seasoned pilots wow crowds with precision aerial maneuvers that exhibit the flying capabilities of the high performance F-16 fighter jet. The team is based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The Thunderbirds are an Air Combat Command unit with eight pilots, four support officers, four civilians and about 110 enlisted members. The 2008 team includes the Air Force's first female lead-solo demonstration pilot, Maj. Samantha Weeks. She is piloting Thunderbird No. 5 for her second year on the team. A Thunderbirds' aerial demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, including ground and air, runs about one hour.
